Bathing suits, also known as swimsuits, are used for many purposes. Basically, the general public, are intended to avoid nudity or exposure when going to swim or sunbathe in public places like beaches and public pools. Swimmers in a competition can be used for thermal protection, and contestants in a beauty contest, to show their bodies.

It is illegal to swim without a bathing suit in many parts of the United States because it is considered a form of indecent exposure. There are beaches and resorts reserved for persons wishing to go naked while swimming. The number of nudist beaches has increased in recent years and its popularity continues to grow.

There are many types of swimwear for men, women and children. Swimsuits for men can include shorts, briefs, board shorts, Jammers, Speedo-style briefs, thongs, or cut-off jeans. Swimsuits for women, mainly consist of one piece swimsuits, bikinis or thongs, with variants like monokinis, string bikinis and tankinis. Most of the beaches allow pants, underwear, shirts, or for use as make-shift swimming suits, swimming pools, but rarely do.

Special types of swimsuits and bathing suits, usually made of spandex, they are generally worn by professional swimmers. They can use the full bodysuits, broker-back styles, Jammers, careers and written for the protection of drag, skin chaffing, stings and abrasion.

There are many types, styles, designs and variants of bathing suits that have emerged in recent years and the number and popularity of certain styles continue to grow.
